Partnership will provide precision detection and locationing of cell phones for correctional facilities; improving safety and bolstering revenue.
ACA 2015 LONG BEACH, Calif. – Addressing the growing problem of illicit cell phone use in correctional facilities, AirPatrol, a developer of mobile device detection systems, and Pay Tel Communications, a provider of inmate phone service, today announced a partnership to combat cell phone smuggling. Under the terms of the partnership, Pay Tel will resell AirPatrol’s ZoneDefense system for detecting and pinpointing the location of cellular and WiFi devices within correctional facilities.
“The partnership is a natural fit for both organizations,” said AirPatrol CEO, Cleve Adams. “AirPatrol technology has enjoyed great success in federal government and high security arenas securing facilities against rogue cell phone use and Pay Tel is a telecommunications leader in correctional facilities where rogue cell phone use by inmates is a serious problem. Together, we have a compelling solution to tackle what has been a challenging issue,” he said.
AirPatrol’s ZoneDefense is a network of sensors that can detect wireless devices using 2G, 3G, 4G cellular and/or 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi networks and provide security personnel with the device’s location accurate to within two meters. Unlike mobile device security systems that attempt to jam or intercept wireless transmissions, ZoneDefense’s technology is passive and does not interfere with carrier networks, making it a superior solution for facilities near population centers, public highways and other areas where civilian mobile phone traffic is common.
“We are looking forward to offering AirPatrol’s ZoneDefense to Pay Tel’s current and future clients,” said John Tayloe, Sales Vice President for Pay Tel. “This technology brings yet another level of security and control to facilities and provides an effective, practical solution to the problem of contraband wireless devices.”
For over 20 years, Pay Tel has been the dominant provider of telephone service for correctional facilities in the Southeast United States. With record-level customer retention, Pay Tel has expanded nationwide offering service from South Florida to the Pacific Northwest. Pay Tel’s mission is to make it easy and affordable for inmates to maintain communication with family and friends.
“Communication is very important within correctional facilities, but it needs to be monitored and managed to ensure the safety of everyone. Illicit cell phones are used to manage and coordinate criminal activities both inside and outside the facilities, making them a threat to other inmates, corrections employees and the general public,” said Adams. “By eliminating contraband devices and directing the inmate population to Pay Tel managed phones, we’re making correctional facilities safer as well as providing a revenue resource that can be used to improve operations.”
AirPatrol is demonstrating ZoneDefense in booth #832 at the American Correctional Association Winter Show in Long Beach, California February 8-10. In addition, AirPatrol will host the Contraband Cell Phone Workshop Monday February 9 from 2-5pm in the Harbor Section B room at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach.
